Y sin duda uno de los momentos que sorprendió a muchos fue cuando el ganador como mejor actor, Will Smith, le dio una bofetada a Chris Rocks por haber hecho una broma a su esposa sobre su corte de cabello. Al principio todo pareció ser montado, pero cuando Will recibió su premio, se disculpó con la academia y sus compañeros nominados, diciendo lo siguiente:
“En este negocio, siempre hay personas que te faltan al respeto, debes sonreír y hacer como que todo está bien. Pero siempre protegeré a mi familia, a mi esposa”
El momento inmediatamente se ha vuelto motivo de memes en todas las redes sociales.
Por otro lado, para concluir la premiación, Liza Minnelli, mejor actriz en los Oscares de 1973, se subió al escenario junto con Lady Gaga, quien se mostró muy amable, para presentar la categoría a mejor película.
